Most photography exhibitions begin with finished images. ‘Before, the photograph’ begins before they exist.
This immersive exhibition invites visitors to walk through the analogue photographic process, following a photograph’s journey from preparation to completion. Moving through a series of spaces, audiences encounter cameras, film, notebooks, photobooks, soundscapes, projections, darkroom materials, negatives, contact sheets, and printing processes before arriving at a final gallery of completed works made in and around Lincoln.
Part installation, part photographic exhibition, and part reflection on attention and observation, the exhibition explores photography not simply as image-making, but as a way of engaging with the world. By slowing down the act of looking, visitors are encouraged to consider the relationship between light, time, memory, and presence.

This season brings together the outcomes of that work in a cohesive programme of five events, each offering a distinctive artistic voice while collectively celebrating each creative individually.
Developed between July 2025 and summer 2026, this season will mark the culmination of a year-long period of research, experimentation and making, inviting audiences to discover the artists and ideas shaping some of Lincoln’s creative community.
Times: Thur – Fri 11am – 5pm, Sat 11am – 4pm.
